I always fancied the idea of fortifying the grocery store, but using it's roof as your primary 'base d'operations'. Explosives would be used to destroy stairs and only ladders and personel operated, extra security pulley-lifts would allow acess. If worst comes to worst then you can always have some extra planks around to bridge your way to a new building and thus 'escape' or at least allow you to blow them up with more explosives garnered from nearby buildings via that exact method.
